SIMCOR is contraindicated in patients with active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases, active peptic ulcer disease, arterial bleeding; in women who are pregnant or may become pregnant; and in nursing mothers. SIMCOR is associated with myopathy, rhabdomyolysis, increases in liver enzymes and glucose levels. Severe hepatic toxicity has occurred when substituting sustained-released niacin for immediate-release niacin at equivalent doses.

Dr. Matthew Budoff & Joe Synopsis
Patient Joe is a physically active 36-year-old detective on the Los Angeles police force with a strong family history of high cholesterol. Concerned about his own health despite being asymptomatic, he turns to Dr. Matthew Budoff, a Cardiologist who specializes in dyslipidemia. Joe's family history, plus his lipid panel suggested he needed aggressive, comprehensive lipid therapy. Dr. Budoff decided to prescribe SIMCOR, a treatment option that combines niacin extended-release and simvastatin. He fosters a trusting physician/patient relationship and helps Joe understand the potential benefits and side effects (especially flushing) of his treatment. Highlights from the SEACOAST study are also discussed.
Dr. Michael Cobble & Paul Synopsis
Dr. Michael Cobble is a Primary Care Physician and Lipidologist in Salt Lake City, Utah who believes that helping patients understand cholesterol is an important and motivating first step in lipid management. His patient Paul, a 59-year-old male with multiple health conditions, presents with 4 NCEP risk factors. Despite therapeutic lifestyle changes, Paul's profile required additional action to be taken to address his mixed dyslipidemia. The lipid efficacy of SIMCOR, along with the convenience of a single co-pay, fixed-dose combination therapy motivated Dr. Cobble to prescribe SIMCOR for Paul's mixed dyslipidemia. Highlights from the SEACOAST and OCEANS studies are also discussed.
